Now that winter is here, and Christmas is just around the corner, you’ve probably been too busy preparing for the holidays to think about your next trip. But once the presents are bought and wrapped, the tree is decorated and the calm after the storm has surrounded you, you may find your thoughts drifting to your next adventure.

There are some long, cold months ahead, and many people find themselves booking last-minute trips this time of year – especially during the New Year’s Sales on flights that have become so common in the last few years. If you’re one of these people, keep reading to get our top tips for a last-minute getaway!

Keep your most important travel necessities in one place

Your passport, proof of travel insurance, your travel credit card (if you have one) and similar important items should always be kept in the same place. My passport cover has pockets for cards, and I keep my proof of insurance, credit card and other necessities here (such as my PADI certificates). That way, when booking a last-minute trip, I always know where I can find everything I need, and don’t have to spend an unnecessary amount of time looking for everything.

Fit in a little bit of research if you can

Sometimes, last minute bookings are to destinations we may not know much about. This can be due to lower prices or a more convenient flight schedule, but either way it’s always good to make sure you know a thing or two about the place. You may not have time to read a complete guide book before heading off, but do take a few minutes to read some blogs and get an idea of what there is to see, what currency you need and how to get from the airport to your hotel.

Use the Dive Shop Locator for your last minute getaway

Check the PADI Dive Shop Locator

Regardless of where I’m travelling or how much preparation time I have, I always find a few minutes to look up the destination in the PADI Dive Shop Locator. Exploring new dive sites and meeting fellow divers all over the world is the absolute best, so make sure to find out if there are any dive spots you can visit and what Dive Centre you want to go diving with during your trip.

Last but not least, enjoy!

For some, a booking made at the last minute can bring with it a small amount of stress, especially if you are used to planning things in advance and always being in control. So, make sure you try to forget about all the things you wish you’d done before leaving, lower your shoulders and just enjoy being on another adventure exploring a new destination!
