1. Determine what you want out of the trip

As the saying goes, “if you don’t know where you’re going – you’ll end up someplace else.” Do you like to see a variety of marine life? Or would you rather explore sunken wrecks? Sometimes a dive spot is “the best” simply because it offers what you’re seeking.

2. Do your research

Websites can provide information about marine life, water temperature, ease of access and other location factors that can help you make an informed decision. It also shares ratings and comments made by other divers. The local dive center(s) will also be an excellent information resource.

3. Wander

On land, finding local spots versus touristy places can be tricky. Often, the best way to find a truly delicious authentic restaurant or that unique store filled with interesting knick knacks is simply to walk around without any particular destination in mind. Let fate be your guide.

4. Make friends

Want to eat where all of the locals eat? Ask the Divemaster or hotel front desk for a recommendation! You’re almost certain to learn of activities and sights to that you wouldn’t have otherwise known about.

5. Don’t plan every minute of your day

Travelers have the tendency to plan out every minute of their day to ensure they see and do as much as possible. Leaving your day open, however, allows you to be flexible and take in experiences as they come.

With a little bit of research and a flexible attitude, you can go on a trip that is enjoyable, rather than stressful. To get started on the planning process, contact a PADI Dive Center or Resort.
