Below is an interview with Marco Villegas – a PADI Instructor who’s made a career out of working on different liveaboard boats around the world. We asked Marco to share his experience and advice, and he was kind enough to do so in English and Español.

What inspired you to become a diver?  ¿Que te inspiro a convertirte en buzo?
Since I was a kid my parents encouraged me to practice water sports and one day I decided I wanted to know how everything looks below the water that I enjoyed so much for so many years.

Why did you decide to become an instructor?  ¿Que te inspiro a convertirte en buzo?
After two years of working as a PADI Divemaster I realized that becoming an instructor allowed me to get people involved in the marine world and teach them not only diving but awareness of the marine world. The job opportunities also are better for an instructor; so for me it was a win-win situation. However I wasn’t completely sure about my skills, so I decided to wait another 2 years and gain experience.

Did you start off working on liveaboards?  ¿Empezaste trabajando como guía en liveaboards?
I started to work on a dive shop doing day trips. I did that for about two years when I got my first liveaboard opportunity. After that very first time I truly loved the idea of a job on liveaboards.

What other jobs did you have (scuba or non-scuba) before you ended up working on liveaboards?
My very first job was on a 18m sail boat as deck crew. After that, I started a job on a very small dive shop in La Paz, Mexico. After that, I moved to a bigger dive shop in a resort, and then I started the liveaboard job.

What diving skills are essential for a diver who would like to do a job like yours?

Patience is very important – towards everything: guests, co-workers, weather, boats, etc. Tolerance is another good characteristic since you have to deal with people from all over the world with very different cultures and personalities. Also be outgoing, and so on.

Other things a diver should have on his/her resume (educational background, languages, volunteer work, etc).

I think that speaking more then only one language is a very big plus, definitely some educational background in marine biology, diving equipment maintenance, management skills, etc.

Bilingüe o poliglota, conocimientos de biología, ecología y conservación marina, algún antecedente educativo de administración, conocimientos de mantenimiento y reparación de equipo de buceo, etc.

What are career opportunities like for divers interested in a job like yours?
I have to admit that is not easy to find those opportunities since there are a lot of people looking for a job in the diving industry, and most of the companies like dive shops and liveaboards are not willing to pay a lot. Even if you are a professional with a lot of experience there is always someone that would do your job for less money. That’s when the situation gets difficult.

Any interesting stories or quotes or bits of advice you’d like me to include for divers who aspire to live the dream of working a dive job full time?

A job on liveaboards is only for those who truly love ocean and diving.

What do you think are common myths about working on a liveaboard – surprising things you never expected.
The biggest and most upsetting myth (at least for me) is when people come up to you and look at you and say: “What a life, getting paid and go diving all the time… this is not a job”. The truth is this job is not easy at all believe it or not sometimes there is stress involved, not a lot of sleep, no privacy, no real social life for weeks or months, etc..

What underwater critter would you like to see that you haven’t already?
¿Qué animal marino no has podido ver aun,  y te gustaría ver?
Tiger shark, mako, blue shark, thresher shark and Black marlin.

Tiburón tigre, Mako, Azul, Zorro y Marlin negro.

What is your favorite place to dive? ¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito para bucear?
Very difficult question I would say Baja California (all of it) and Revillagigedo.
