Researchers at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in California have found the mysterious voice telling divers to get out of the water. Researchers now believe that the voice is that of a teenage white whale called NOC.
The researchers have suggested that the white whale may be attempting to make contact with the divers. Researchers said: “Our observations suggest that the whale had to modify its vocal mechanics in order to make the speech-like sounds. Such obvious effort suggests motivation for contact.”
While there has been stories and reports of whales imitating humans, the findings published in the Current Biology Journal are the first to record and analyse the noises scientifically.
